For many peaple, economic growth and an increase in possessions are signs of progress, but for anti-consumer groups over- consumption is a sickness. A recent Public Broadcasting Service documentary invented the term affluenza, which describes consumption of material goods in a strongly negative wav.

The term afflaenza combines two words: *affluence and influenza. According to anti-consumer and environmental rights organizations, the high consumption lifestyles of affluence cause people to be less happy even though they ar acquiring more "things." The major negative effect on the environment is that over-consumption is depleting the world's natural resources, anti-consumer groups argue.
